Standing Up Against Discrimination
Day of Pink's Commitment to Our Volunteers
On May 2, 2023, a regrettable incident unfolded at a hotel in Charlottetown, PEI involving one of our dedicated volunteers, Veronica Merryfield.
Upon arrival, Veronica faced immediate hostility from the hotel staff. Despite providing confirmation details, she was denied check-in. Efforts to resolve the situation were dismissed. The staff member further escalated the situation with his use of transpohbic comments, and ultimately saying that the hotel does not accommodate "these types here".
In response, the Day of Pink reached out to the hotel management, seeking an apology and proposing free 2SLGBTQIA+ training to prevent future incidents. The hotel's refusal to engage. Shortly thereafter, we filed a complaint with the PEI Human Rights Commission. We are pleased that through the Commission, the hotel settled with an undisclosable amount and a formal apology. Additionally, the hotel has agreed to participate in 2SLGBTQIA+ training with a local organization.
A representative of the Day of Pink, emphasized the significance of supporting our volunteers: "Our volunteers are the backbone of our mission. Standing behind them in times of adversity is not just our duty, but our commitment to fostering an inclusive society."
Veronica reflected on the incident, highlighting the broader challenges faced by the trans and gender-diverse community: "While this experience was deeply upsetting, it's a reality many trans and gender-diverse individuals face daily. Volunteering with the Day of Pink is empowering because I know they unequivocally have my back."
A portion of the settlement funds will be allocated to Veronica, acknowledging her ordeal. The remaining funds will be utilized by the Day of Pink to develop new 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion training programs tailored for the hospitality industry, aiming to prevent such incidents in the future.
