Day of Pink Speakers Bureau
Brock McGillis
(He/Him) English
Sport cultures are a mirror of society. Hockey culture influences corporate culture, school culture and society as a whole. We are all one degree of separation from the sport. Brock McGillis uses his personal experiences and coming-out story to humanize the experience of being queer in professional men’s hockey.
After humanizing the experiences of being queer, Brock breaks down tangible ways to create safe and comfortable spaces in the work place, schools, sporting venues, and more. Mainly focusing on language while also emphasizing the need for individuality and celebrating non-conformity. The more we embrace who we are, the less likely we are to judge others.
Recognizing that most people want to be good, Brock then inspires his audience to be shift makers. Through storytelling and sharing experiences, Brock teaches people how they too can use their influence to impact society. We all have the ability to create shifts and regardless whether it’s in our home life, work life or beyond this will have a ripple effect for minority people and ultimately create change on a larger scale.
Brock is open to any questions and is comfortable engaging in conversation in a thoughtful way with those who may be in opposition to homosexuality. He also uses his years of experience to help be a tool to those who may be struggling with their sexuality or the sexuality of a loved one. Brock has also been a resource for folks struggling in other aspects of their lives.
